Kayaking, Labor Day weekend
How was your Labor Day weekend (for those in the USA)? This might be the last time out with the kayak since summer is winding down. I was excited to try out my new GPS watch. You can see a screenshot from my phone. It was 8.8 miles. Max speed was 5 mph. We had about 30 minutes stationary. When I load the tracks on my PC, you can see several times where we circle back on the river. That’s because most of my family and friends like to float and drink. So when they say, let’s go kayaking, it’s not what most people think. Anyway, it’s super fun. It was supposed to rain but it didn’t.
I also had a chance to try out my Ultimate Ears Wonderboom Bluetooth speaker. It’s supposed to be waterproof. It fell into the river a few times but I quickly grabbed it each time. So I’ll say it’s waterproof enough for my needs. It sounds good too. My only complaint is that the music app on my phone doesn’t normalize the volume so you end up messing with the volume all of the time.
My next test with my GPS watch will be in Wyoming.

Peter Lindelauf the GPS watch is more for hiking but there was one time where there was a split in the river and we had to wait about 10 minute for the rest of the group to catch up. We could have guessed which way to go but we are in a tandem and might need help if we come up to a dam or something. This is our first year kayaking.
If it was just me and the Mrs kayaking, then for sure we would skip the tunes. However, the group we are with are laughing and making a raucous so it’s impossible to just listen to nature.

It was great. The kids did really well. It’s about a 2.5 mile hike from the trailhead and the last mile is just up, so I was very glad that the little one made it to the treeline before the sit-in protest began. (After a short rest she happily played in the dirt and picked the occasional berry while I worked).

Also, which watch? I’m semi- in the market for a GPS, though I’d kinda like to hold out for a Garmin Rhino. I like the idea of having a GPS and FRS radio as a single unit.

If you will have a rental…
Head south from Jackson Hole on US Hwy 191, through Hoback Junction, where 191 turns east. Keep on 191 a few miles, and take a left on Granite Creek Road. Follow this good gravel road til a split, take the right split. Follow it to the end, past a really pretty waterfall.
About a 1/4 mile . past the Granite Creek Campground is a parking lot for Granite Hotsprings Pool . It’s a short walk from the parking lot. There is a nominal fee. Great concrete pool fed by piping hot hotsprings, with an “infiniti pool” style view of the crags and forest around you.
Well, well worth half hour jaunt south.
