My life in three songs

My life in three songs

WBEZ’s The Morning Shift, has been running a segment on their show called “My life in three songs”. Some people said they were able to come up with three songs immediately. I love music and many genres, but I couldn’t think of three songs. I kept looking through playlists, CDs, and was about to dig through my vinyl. Then I remembered that a handful of my #MusicMonday  posts were more than just ‘hey here’s a song I like and here’s the lyrics’. The first song/post I picked is Fortunate Son by Creedence Clearwater Revival. It’s not only a good song but the post will explain how I relate to it.

The second song is Don’t stop believing by Journey. The first reason I picked this song is because I’m a Red Wings fan. The post linked below explains that for those who don’t know. The song also has another relationship to my life. You have to believe in yourself. I wouldn’t be where I am now if I didn’t believe in myself. I grew up relatively poor with no expectation to go to college. I knew we couldn’t afford it and I wasn’t going to get an athletic or academic scholarship. Several student loans later, which I’ll lament about later, and I’ve been a scientist at two of Chicago’s premier universities for over a decade.

The last song is Echoes part 1 by Pink Floyd. I’m a big Pink Floyd fan and most of the friends I’ve made on Google Plus grew from talking about Pink Floyd. If you look at Rajini Rao’s and Gnotic Pasta’s profiles, would you guess we all became good friends because of Pink Floyd? So I had to pick a Pink Floyd song, but which one? What about Dogs? I love dogs; I post a lot about dogs. What about Comfortably numb? I chose Echoes because it’s a great song and I use echoes all the time. You’ll have to read my MRI 101 post to figure out how echoes related to MRI.

Have a great #MusicMonday  and I challenge you to tell me your life in three songs.

Thanks Paul Lamoureux. I could have picked three songs from each genre. It was really tough.

Hmmmm, this challenge is turning out to be more difficult than I expected. Only 3 songs ? Kudos to you Chad Haney, great song choices too. I especially like your selection of Don’t stop believing . I love Journey and that’s one of my favorites.

I forgot to give a link to Soundcloud where you can listen to how some regular Chicagoans and some famous (locally at least) people answered the challenge.

Fascinating. And superb choices, Chad. I’d have to find a way to sneak in just 1 Doors song in there…… and a Pearl Jam. And and……

    Nope, can’t do only 3.

The key was “my life” in three songs: of course, there are tons of songs that I love or associate with special memories, but which ones do I identify my life with? These three are as meaningful to me today, as when I first heard them.

    1) Pink Floyd’s Time: because when I was a teen I knew that I was not going to be “kicking around on a piece of ground in my home town”. Today, “the sun is the same in a relative way but I’m older” and I “run and run to catch up with the sun, but it’s sinking. Racing around to come up behind me again”. Poignant and true.

    2) Queen/Freddie Mercury’s Don’t Stop Me Now: This captures all the ebullience, optimism and ambition in me, “I’m having such a good time…defying the laws of gravity..don’t stop me now” 🙂

    3) John Lennon’s Imagine: My favorite Beatle makes a case for a utopian future with “no country, nothing to kill or die for, and no religion too, no need for greed or hunger “. The more I travel, grow and learn, the more ridiculous is our current state of politics of divisiveness and hate.

Chad Haney I do love CCR although my favorite is Looking out my backdoor . It’s an instant pick me up. It just makes me happy! Animals is a great album, although Wish you were here may just edge it out by a tiny bit. Very different moods. Love the story of your identifying with Journey’s Don’t stop believing. Great post, thanks!
