Open house at Orchids by Hausermann 2015

Open house at Orchids by Hausermann 2015

We made it out to the open house at Orchids by Hausermann today. I think we missed the open house for a few years. I was happy to purchase a flowering maple (Abutilon) today. They had a really large one for many years but none for sale. This year we saw a few small plants and I had to have one. We picked up another un-potted cattleya. They are a bargain at $9.99 and smell wonderful when they bloom. We also took a chance on Epidendrum pseudoepidendrum which is the delicate orange and pink flower in the photos. The one we purchased has two buds (the one in the picture was a sample, not for sale). We also have some buds on our existing collection of orchids along with our bird of paradise. I’m looking forward to trying to propagate the flowering maple.

Happy #FloralFriday  from the Dominican Republic

Happy #FloralFriday  from the Dominican Republic

As you can imagine, there are a lot of beautiful flowers in the Dominican Republic. It seems that most of my photos from my recent vacation are either flowers or fish. My wife and I decided to purchase a waterproof point&shoot camera for our next trip to the DR. Her brother’s waterproof Kodak did a pretty good job. I’m almost done selecting photos and making captions for a post of my vacation.

19 inches of snow, Superb Owl Sunday

19 inches of snow, Superb Owl Sunday

My friends in the UK say it’s snowing. My Canadian friends and I say, “that’s cute”. The side streets are still messed up. My MINI Cooper would have been no match. I got it beached in the snow once. Even my Touareg TDI with AWD briefly got stuck in the alley. I was tempted to buy snow tires. When I was a kid in Michigan, everyone had snow tires and at least one bag of sand or salt in their trunk or boot at my British friends say. I don’t have a bag of sand or salt in my VW but I have a small shovel. I had to use it to dig out a Camry. That wasn’t the workout I wanted on my way to work.
