Bruneau Dunes – To tame a land

Bruneau Dunes – To tame a land

I had an awesome time camping with Gnotic Pasta,  Mary Owens, and company, at Bruneau Dunes State Park, just outside of Boise, Idaho. The dunes are deceptive. A few meters from the top, the grade changes pretty dramatically. It was worth the effort. The Bruneau canyon was spectacular too. I can’t wait to go back to go camping in the mountains. We lucked out and the clouds cleared so we could see the Whirlpool Galaxy, Messier 51

I mentioned Virtual Star Party to Greg, one of the telescope operators there. It would be awesome if he follows up with Scott Lewis or Fraser Cain so everyone can check out the skies without light pollution.

No, some kid rolled down, nearly the whole dune. I was sick just watching.

Reminds me of rolling down Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes (a National Park near Traverse City, Michigan) as a kid. I saw somebody in my path (with their back to me, shouting to somebody further down the hill) as I was rolling, and I thought to yell out to them to warn them.  Result?  A mouthful of sand (for me) and a climber knocked flat on his behind.  Good times…  ;-{)

    A little background…

“The sand dunes themselves have out-of-this-world impact. The two most prominent cover about 600 acres and include the largest single structured sand dune in North America. Its peak is 470 feet above the desert floor. The dunes have formed over the past 15,000 years as the natural basin redirected the constantly blowing wind, which in turn, deposited Snake River sand grain by grain to form the sand hills. Unlike many sand dunes, these don’t drift. Two prevailing winds keep the dunes stable, one blowing from the southeast and one from the northwest.”

You bet Michael Davis. It’s really interesting to met people IRL after “knowing” them on G+ for a long time.
